Compare Embrace to Trupanion

When looking at Trupanion's pet insurance coverage, it's important to remember they don't cover exam fees, which can be a significant expense if your pet needs a specialist or has a condition that requires frequent trips to the vet. In addition, Trupanion has a per-condition deductible, which will need to be met each time you visit the vet for a new condition. Finally, Trupanion doesn't offer a routine care plan, so you'll have to cover those expenses on your own.

15 Reasons to Consider Embrace over Trupanion Pet Insurance

Embrace Pet Insurance vs Trupanion Pet Insurance

1. Trupanion Doesn’t Offer A Wellness Plan

Trupanion only covers accidents and illnesses with no option for routine care reimbursement. Embrace promotes, rewards, and encourages healthy pets by offering Wellness Rewards, an optional non-insurance product that reimburses for everyday veterinary, grooming, and training costs.

Without the option of a wellness plan there are gaps in Trupanion’s policy. With Embrace there’s no doubt that you have total protection in sickness AND in health.

2. Trupanion Doesn’t Reimburse Exam Fees

Trupanion does not include the exam fee in their reimbursement. Visiting an emergency hospital, or even going to a scheduled visit at your primary veterinarian or a veterinary specialist, can include an expensive exam fee – sometimes well over $100. Not having coverage for these fees is like having to pay an extra deductible at every visit. Embrace believes this fee should be covered, which is why we offer that option in our plans.

3. Embrace Includes Complementary Treatments at No Extra Cost

Trupanion doesn’t include complementary treatments* like acupuncture or chiropractic care in their policy. In order to get complementary treatments, their Recovery and Complementary Care add-on coverage would need to be purchased at an additional cost. Embrace includes complementary treatments with every policy at no extra cost.

4. Embrace Offers One Annual Deductible No Matter the Number of Vet Visits

Embrace uses an annual deductible, while Trupanion uses a per-condition deductible. An annual deductible only needs to be met once per year, regardless of how many claims are made. Plans with a per-condition deductible require a new deductible to be paid for every vet visit for a new condition. If a pet has an unlucky year, the out-of-pocket costs could be higher by a few hundred dollars with a per-condition deductible.

5. Embrace Offers More Budget-friendly Coverage Options than Trupanion

Trupanion does not allow customization to the annual maximum or the reimbursement percentage of their plan. Embrace allows you to pick your annual deductible, annual maximum, and reimbursement percentage.

Trupanion’s policy is a set reimbursement that leaves little wiggle room. With their high reimbursement percentage, the premium is likely to be much higher. All pet insurance premiums increase over time for one reason or another, and with Embrace’s policy you can make small changes in your coverage to fit your budget.

6. Embrace Requires Less Medical History to Process Claims

Trupanion requires 18 months of a pet’s medical records to process claims. Embrace only needs the last 12 months of records or, for new pets, records back to the first visit you’ve had with them.

7. Embrace Reimburses More for Prescription Diets

Trupanion offers only 50% back on prescription diet foods under their main policy and this reimbursement is subject to deductible and copay. Plus, they’ll only cover it for two months. Embrace reimburses prescription diet foods with Wellness Rewards 100% up to your selected annual allowance with no time restrictions.

8. Embrace Allows More Time to Submit Claims

Trupanion requires claims to be submitted within 90 days of the office visit. Embrace gives you your entire policy term, plus 60 days after it renews to submit your claims.

9. Embrace has Higher Age Limits at Enrollment

Trupanion’s cutoff age for enrolling pets is 14 years old. At Embrace, your pets are eligible for accident and illness coverage up to their 15th birthday, and after 15 years of age they are eligible for an accident-only policy. Wellness Rewards is available with all policies.

10. Trupanion Doesn’t Cover Preventable Conditions

Trupanion does not cover conditions that are preventable with vaccines or preventatives, including heartworm, fleas, internal parasites, and more. Embrace covers preventable conditions.

11. No Dental Exam Required with Embrace

In order to receive coverage for dental illness under Trupanion’s policy, pets must undergo an annual dental exam at the owner’s expense. Embrace’s dental illness coverage doesn’t require any sort of annual checkup.

12. Embrace Offers a Multiple-pet Discount

Trupanion does not offer a discount for having multiple pets on a policy. Embrace offers a 10% discount (5% in NY & WA) for having multiple pets on your policy.

13. Trupanion Has Limited Coverage for Pets Internationally

Trupanion’s policy only covers pets in the United States, Puerto Rico, Canada and Australia, as well as US military installations worldwide. Embrace covers your pet wherever you travel, even when traveling internationally for up to six months.

14. Embrace Offers Coverage for Pets Involved in Organized Racing

Trupanion will not cover injuries or illnesses a pet sustains while racing. As long as you let us know your pet is involved in racing at the start of your plan, or when they become involved in racing, Embrace will cover them.

15. Trupanion Doesn’t Offer a 24/7 Pet Health Line

Trupanion does not give their policyholders access to pet professionals round-the-clock, so if you have questions about your pet’s behavior, diet, or a possible emergency, you’d have to wait for your vet’s regular business hours. Embrace has partnered with PawSupport to give our policyholders access to Pet Pros 24 hours a day, seven days a week – even on holidays. And the best part is that this feature is included with every policy at no extra cost.
